Step Aside Chocolate

When I was a child one of the most exciting December was not just Christmas but the possibility of getting an advent calendar. My mom didn’t approve of me eating sweets much and to be honest she didn’t have a lot of money so chocolate wasn’t always something we bought. But every once in a while there would be a year when I would get an advent calendar on December 1st. The excitement of having a small chocolate to eat everyday as I counted down the days to Christmas was almost as exciting as Christmas itself. And getting one late, like half way to Christmas was also very fun because I got to scoff on days worth of chocolates in one day.

Book cover for Whims of the Wicked by Rebecca Grey

This story follows Sonnet as she endeavours to create the perfect Yule for her family. She enlists the help of a questionable man named Malcolm, who makes a deal to help her in return for her helping him. Larceny, flirting, balls and all sorts of other entertaining situations ensue, providing you with a great, heart-warming read. It is so easy to get lost is this beautiful Yule filled world that Rebecca has created. Nothing was too difficult to understand, the magical and social systems made total sense, without needing 8 chapters of information dump.

The two main characters, Sonnet and Malcolm, are delightful! Flawed, yet likeable and endearing. You root for them the whole way through the story. And even the supporting characters are cute and help bring this story to life.

I also loved the idea of this being a book advent calendar. I no longer eat chocolate so much, probably reached my limit after eating so much as a kid, but this type of advent calendar is exactly what a bookish person like me needs in my Christmas life. Now I realise that Christmas is almost here, but grab this book advent calendar and devour it like it was chocolate. You will not be disappointed.
