Where do I even begin talking about this book? I love fairy tales and fairy tale retelling are quickly becoming one of my favourite fantasy genres. And this is definitely one of my favourites in this genre.
This story takes us through a land where cute fairytales meet the horror and grit of their Grimm origins, where Eveline (the Seeker) has been hired by the Huntsman to find the missing princess. Along the way they encounter heart-eating queens, trolls, dwarves, fairies, giants, ghouls and very confusing feelings for each other.
I really enjoyed the plot of this story. It had the grittiness of the original Grimm’s fairytales that I adore and mixed numerous fairytales together it a clever way that didn’t feel congested or convoluted. Now I was a bit put off by the fact that the ending didn’t tie everything up nicely, but it doesn’t bother me that much because I have the next book and plan on reading it like yesterday.
The multiple POVs was used really well to give us, the reader, better insight into characters, and give us back story without it being a huge info dump. Even Porchid, who doesn’t speak at all, is made to communicate in such a clear way that you never don’t understand. The grittiness also makes everything more believable. I mean we all know that the real-world is full of people who would use their magic for not so nice things.
The characters are all well-rounded, while being likeable and flawed. They are easy to relate to and the slow build up of the relationships is realistic.
This story is well worth the read. It is entertaining, sometimes a little heart breaking and on more than one occasion profound. I cannot wait to get stuck into book two.
